History

The Opinicon has stood on the shores of Opinicon Lake since 1870, when it was first built as a private residence. Its prime location on a lake rich with bass, and surrounded by the waterways of the Rideau Canal, made it a natural draw for fishermen and travellers passing through.

In 1921, W.E. Phillips purchased the property and reopened it as The Opinicon Club. For the next 90 years, the same family ran the lodge, and it became a beloved destination for boaters, cottagers, and families who returned summer after summer for hot meals, cold drinks, and ice cream cones.

By the early 2010s, the buildings had fallen into disrepair and The Opinicon closed its doors. New owners with a cherished connection to The Opinicon purchased the property in 2015, determined to restore the lodge and preserve its character while giving it new life for the next generation.

After extensive renovations, The Opinicon reopened in the summer of 2015. The work continues, but the spirit of the place remains the same as it ever was: the lake, the trees, the long tables, the ice cream.
